Bucks Broomball - Team History
|
What's in a Name? The Bucks began playing outdoor broomball in 96, although they went by "Jucy Lucy" at that time. The team was sponsored by Matt's Bar in south Minneapolis and was made up of mostly Carleton College graduates. The next year the team was renamed in honor of Brian Leither's hunting success in the northwoods. Brian bagged his first buck near Lutsen and the team has been called The Bucks ever since.
Summary of Bucks History The Bucks started out rough in 1996, didn't win a game and took last place in their league.
In 1997, they had a winning record, but two of the regular season wins were by forfeit.
The Bucks were 2nd in their league in 1998, losing only to the Millers 3-11.
In 1999 the Bucks moved to a more difficult league and dropped to last place. They lost 4 games but managed to tie the Millers 1-1.
2000 saw some improvement, but the Bucks still lost their second playoff game.
The Bucks took 2nd place in their league in 2001, losing only to Al's. But they defeated Al's later in the playoffs to advance to the final four, losing to Porter's. Porter's went on to become champions. The Bucks also went to the Cabble tournament for the first time and placed in the middle of the pack.
The Bucks took second place in the league in 2002, losing to Bunkers. The Bucks then defeated Bunkers in the semi final game and defeated Vision Vending (formally Porter's) to become the Mpls Outdoor Champions for the first time. the Bucks went to Omaha for Nationals and missed getting into the final four. The Bucks went to Colorado Springs for the first time and took home the title going undefeated.
In 2003 the Bucks tied Grace Chasers for 1st in the league but lost to Grace Chasers in the semi-final game in OT. Grace Chasers went on to win the title. The Bucks had a poor Winter Carnival showing, took 2nd place at Cabble, took 3rd place at the Midwestern and repeated as champions in Colorado Springs.
In 2004, the Bucks won the regular season, but lost to Adrian's in the quarterfinal game. The Bucks lost in the quarterfinal of the Winter Carnival and took 2nd place at Colorado Springs.
2005 was the year of revenge and the Bucks beat Adrian's in the semi final game and beat Bunkers in the championship game to regain the title. The Bucks advanced to the championship game of the Winter Carnival, but couldn't pull out the win.
2006 the Bucks end up in a 3-way tie for 1st in the regular season, thanks to a Bunkers win over Adrian's in the final week. Bucks run into Bunkers in the final game again and take home the trophy for the 2nd straight year. We went to the Cold Spring tourney, ended up in the middle of the pack, but had an great time. Definitely something we'll do again.
2007 the Bucks lost their only league game to Mortimers. The Bucks defeated Bunkers in the final and took home the trophy for the 3rd year in a row. We had a dismal showing at Winter Carnival and went 0-2-1 and lost the C&L in the first bracket game.
