2004 Regular Season Results
Week 1, Jan 8th Results 6 pm Adrian's tie Bunkers 6-6 7 pm Legends defeat Southside Commandos 3-2 8 pm Bucks defeat Murray's 8-3
Eight is Enough The Bucks started out their 2004 season with a win over Murray's (formally Al's) at Bryn Mawr on January 8th. The game had a slow start and didn't include a shot for the first 5 minutes. But patient ball control paid off and the Bucks ended up scoring 8 on the night. Gatti had the hat trick and Andy tallied up three assists from the defensive zone as the Bucks won 8-3.
Play of the Week Megan nearly got an assist when a ball bounced off her arm and stayed in the rink. Gatti took it to the net for the score, but upon instant replay, the goal was nullified. So the play of the week goes to Cheney and Wall for their nice moves behind the net and in front of the crease that resulted in the 6th goal. Nice work guys!
Week 2, Jan 15th Results 6 pm Bucks defeat Legends 4-2 7 pm Bunkers vs. Murray's 8 pm Adrian's defeat Commandos.
Dump But No Chase Ira and Tommy were at the helm of the Legends team, orchestrating how they were going to break into the Bucks zone. They went with the dump and chase method since we weren't giving them anything on the red line. The problem was that they would dump it, but they didn't have the speed or the momentum to chase it. Both goalies played well and the last goal was an open netter, so the 4-2 win by the Bucks looks a little more lopsided in the standings than it really was. Overall, a very clean, well-played game by both teams.
Play of the Week We have to give it to Ira on their first goal. We knew we had to watch him and keep him from making a big play. We all talked about it. Yet he was able to basically run through our entire team and score while making it look like a piece of cake. Hats off to Ira.
Week 3, Jan 22nd Results 6 pm Bunkers defeat Commandos. 7 pm Adrian's defeat Bucks 5-3. 8 pm Legends vs. Murray's
The Mystery Goalie The Bucks lost their first league game of the year to a team that played without a goalie!! The first week we saw them we figured their goalie didn't show - and we felt bad for them. Now we realize that is just how they play. Adrian's (formally Can Dental) lines up with 3 forwards and 3 defensemen. It's a mental game. Every team I watch play them can't hit the open net for some reason - including us. They control the ball really well, they all have great reach, good ball handling skills and they pour on the offense. They basically take a gamble in their defensive zone and hope that they can put enough in the net to offset the easy goals they give up. It worked against the Bucks. The Bucks had a 3-2 lead with only 3 minutes left in the game. Adrian's then came up with 3 consecutive goals and the Bucks couldn't answer. Final score: Arians 5, Bucks 3.
Play of the Week Walfoort. I wasn't there, but apparently he was the first one to a dumped ball and all he had to do was push it in for the score since Adrian's didn't have a goalie. The story the night of the game put Walfoort out on the edge of the crease. That next weekend at winter carnival, he said he was down lower, closer to the goal line, off to one side. Then at warm-ups a week later, "my heels were on the goal line - I had almost NO angle!" Either way, he lifted it up and over the goal. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that there weren't any defensemen in the area - BUT THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY!
Week 4, Jan 29th Results 6 pm Murray's defeat Commandos 4-3 7 pm Adrian's defeat Legends 6-4. 8 pm Bucks defeat Bunkers 7-2.
-12 Degrees Both teams waited in the warming house until the refs walked out to the rink. It was bitter cold. For the first time, the Bucks were happy to only see 7 players. Little to no warm-up. The game started slow - like a cold battery. Both teams appeared to be playing in slow motion. Even Al was quiet! Kayne broke it open with a nice flip over Al's head. Al was coming way out to challenge him and Kayne knew how to beat that. "Come on - that's not broomball!!" The Bucks ended up putting 7 shots past Al and everything was going our way. Gatti left half way through the second half and we started mixing it all up. At one point, Andy, Matt and Jason were the forwards. Bunkers scored two goals to make the final score 7-2.
Play of the Week 3 for a dollar. Early in the game Schnauze pushed off the boards and wound up to take a shot. Matt got in front of it and blocked the shot - pretty close to the family gems. It rebounded right back to Schnauze. Another shot - right off Matt's cage. AND RIGHT BACK TO SCHNAUZE! Schnauze took a third shot - this time falling off balance and yelling: "THREE FOR A DOLLAR" as he swung. The third one missed and went sailing out of the rink.
Stats include all Bucks games played in 2004 (Mpls regular season, Mpls playoffs, Winter Carnival, Colorado Springs)
